Oars generally are connected to the vessel by means of oarlocks which transmit the applied force to the boat. In this system (known as a second class lever) the water is the fulcrum.
Oarlocks are usually a U-shaped or circular metal hoop on a swivel in the gunwale, used to hold an oar in place and as a fulcrum in rowing. The boats of sailing men-o-war had a vertical plank around the sides of the boat atop the gunwale. This had square slots, called rowlocks, into which the oars were fitted.
